Lithium Ion UPS batteries are a game-changer when it comes to UPS systems. While the traditional valve, regulated lead-acid batteries have done well for the industry over the years, the benefits of using lithium-ion batteries has become too great to ignore.
Today, we’re going to discuss a few of the things that have made lithium-ion UPS batteries so attractive for business owners and some of the reasons why you should consider them for your server room. Let’s jump right in!
Longer lasting
Bottom line is that lithium ion batteries last twice as long as other batteries. While VRLA batteries last around 3 to 5 years, Lithium Ion batteries can last 8-10 years and in the case of some premium models – even longer than that. What that means is you may never have to replace the battery throughout the entire functional life of your UPS system – which certainly cuts down on a significant cost in regards to maintenance.
Smaller, lighter, more flexible
Lithium batteries are 40-60% lighter than VRLA’s and 40% smaller in size. This makes them far easier to store on racks and provides you with a lot more flexibility in terms of installation. It also gives you more room to work with and if you know anything about the industry today – data center space is at an absolute premium. The space saved can add up in a big way!
Faster recharges
Once a backup battery swings into action, it needs to be recharged as quickly as possible back to full capacity. VRLA batteries take about 12 hours to charge. Lithium Ion batteries only take 2 to 4 hours. That reduces your risk of something bad happening from a second successive power outage significantly.
Less performance degradation
Lithium-ion batteries last longer and don’t take a beating in the heat. That can’t be said with VRLA batteries. For every 15 degrees of temperature above 77 degrees, VRLA can lose almost half their life expectancy. Lithium Ion batteries can be in environments up to 104 degrees with little to no issue. This makes them a far more durable battery to use.
