What makes lithium ion batteries stand out

When it comes to powering UPS Systems – lithium Ion UPS batteries truly stand out from the pack. While traditional lead and acid based batteries have done well over the years, we’re finally at a point where they’ve simply been passed and for anyone with ongoing power needs; they’ve really become the most responsible choice.

So why have these batteries become so attractive to business owners? Well, that’s what we’re here to discuss today. Here’s what makes a lithium-ion battery stand out and some of the reasons you should include them in your server room build. Let’s jump right in!

Longer life span

Perhaps the biggest reason that business owners gravitate to lithium ion batteries is because they simply have significantly longer lifespans than other forms of power supplies. While WRLA batteries perform for about 3-5 years, Lithium Ion batteries practically lap them with an 8-10 year lifespan. Some premium models last even long than that, if you can believe it. What this means is that you might not ever have to purchase a second power supply throughout the entirety of your UPS system’s life. And especially if you’re looking to ebb cost – this is a big deal/

They don’t take up as much space

Lithium Ion batteries pack twice the punch at half the size. Your average Lithium ion battery is about 40% smaller and ways up to 60% less. This allows you to better manage space in your server room and if you know anything about how they’re supposed to be set up – layout and spacing is a really meaningful thing. Any space you get pays dividends.

Lithium batteries recharge quickly

Another significant benefit of Lithium ion batteries is their ability to recharge quickly. In the event your system is down, your battery will go to work. Over time, it will drain down. But once it’s back up, it will only take around 2 to 4 hours for your battery to completely recharge – which when stacked up against more traditional VRLA batteries (which take around 12 hours to charge fully) – is meaningful. What’s also worth noting is that power outages come in two’s many times, so there’s very little to worry about in terms of the risk of a power event happening in succession.

More durable, more flexible

Lithium ion batteries – at least for a little while – can operate at peak performance in a variety of settings and temperatures. This is a welcome change from the previous generation of battery which for every 15 degrees above 77 degrees in the temperature of a server room; the battery could degrade significantly – losing up to half its life expectancy! That’s no small number. This makes lithium ion batteries the far more durable to the two power sources.
